The US Navy’s Transit IV satellite was launched, the first known to carry a nuclear power source in the form of a radioisotope-powered battery.

The Vickers VC10 jet airliner, piloted by G.R. "Jock" Bryce and Brian Trubshaw, made its first flight, taking off from Weybridge, Surrey, and landing at Wisley.

The prototype Saab 105 twin-jet trainer made its first flight.

A Fleet Air Arm Westland/Aerospatiale Lynx HAS.Mk 2 made the first at-sea deck landing of the type aboard the helicopter support ship RFA Engadine.

Lockheed-Georgia completed the modification of 270 USAF C-141A StarLifter transports to C-141B standard. The first C-141B had been redelivered to the USAF on 4 December 1979. The C-141B has a fuselage ‘stretch’ of 7.11 m (23 ft 4 in), increasing cargo volume by 61.48 cu m (2171 cu ft) to 322.71 cu m (11 399 cu ft).
