Having received an order from United Air Lines for 30 examples of its proposed Model 767-200 wide-body medium-range transport, Boeing announced that the type would enter full-scale development and production.

The first flight in a short evaluation programme was made by a Grumman F-14 Tomcat powered by two General Electric F101-DFE advanced augmented turbofan engines.

The first flight took place of the Chinese Harbin Y-11T Turbo-Panda, a STOL general-purpose transport powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprop engines. The piston-engined version had first flown in 1975.
